"They should obey the laws and avoid corruption," he told a meeting to mark the 12th anniversary of the programme.

Trong said the ministry had achieved a lot in the fight against corruption and economic crimes. "The fight still has a long way to go and can be very complex. The police should therefore work well with other ministries, departments and enterprises," he said.

Trong also urged the ministry and other organisations, companies and enterprises to promote programmes raising the awareness of staff and officials on politics, law and working ethics. "The organisations should get rid of people who do not meet ethical standards," he added.

Since the programme started in 1988, police have uncovered 152,012 economic crimes, of which 17,733 cases are related to corruption. The total amount of money involved has reached VND176,610 billion (US$9.3billion).

The ministry has also reported that some officials in some ministries and organisations do not fully understand the importance of the programme. Some police officials have even been prosecuted for committing crimes.

At the meeting, the ministry also assessed its three-year-old programme to help enterprises protect their brands and copyrights, and in stopping fake and poor quality goods being sold in the market.
