Initiated in August 2007, the Kieu Ky commune drinking water supply project aims to hook up nearly 3,000 households of this community in the suburbs of Hanoi, including families of craftsmen who make leather handbags, recycle cardboard boxes or hammer gold for decoration. A number of other businesses have also set up shop in the commune.
The project owner is Water Company No. 2 that operates a network covering part of Gia Lam district, but which has not yet been expanded to include Kieu Ky commune. This project calls for the installation of primary, secondary and service mains, as well as the construction of a reservoir and way station.
Funding for the project is covered by the city of Hanoi, the Île-de-France region, Gia Lam district and Kieu Ky commune. The local residents will cover the cost of putting in service mains and purchasing individual water meters.
In the early summer of 2008, Water Company No. 2 merged with the Hanoi Water Company, which then became the sole provider for the city. The water supply network technical studies were
completed in September 2008 and submitted to the Hanoi Department of
Construction for approval. In 2009, the city authorities decided to extend the
network to other communes in the district, which significantly increased the
investment budget and requirement for further studies.
These studies were carried out in 2010. Funding from
the Île-de-France Region will be used to put in the secondary network for one village
in Kieu Ky commune in 2011.
