Two French urban planning engineers living in Hanoi were commissioned by IMV to update the NIURP socio-economic database and deliver a mapping of a prototype regional geographic information system (GIS) (MapInfo format). This enabled a population, environmental and socio-economic inventory of fixture of the region, as well as for each province, to be made. Population data were compiled at the district level. Over 40 maps illustrate the product of this effort. The first ever treatment of such data enabled Vietnamese urban planners to better grasp local specificities in a regional perspective.
