Cau Giay site prior to redevelopment |
Hanoi did not have any bus interchange although some stops at major intersections were being served by a dozen different lines.
The Cau Giay project was designed as a pilot bus interchange project on a city-edge site served by 15 bus lines and that handled 15,000 passengers a day (getting on and getting off). Prior to construction, pedestrians had to struggle to get on or get off in the middle of very disorderly moving traffic. The shelters were insufficient to hold all transferring passengers.

In addition to putting in a 100-m long central platform for all stops on one site, serving both sides of the long bus shelters, booths for tickets and bus passes, parking lots for motorcycles and bicycles, and toilets were put in. The choice of putting the platform on the site was the fruitage of an in-depth model building of passenger flows, the speed with which buses loaded/unloaded passengers and other traffic movements using a special computer model.

This facility was inaugurated by Mr. Jean-Félix Bernard, regional councilor and chairman of the International Relations Commission, Mr. Jean-François Blarel, ambassador of France to Vietnam and Mr. Pham Quoc Truong, director, Hanoi Department of Transportation and Public Works.
