Trainers: Patrick Fenetaud and Didier Vandon (Paris Public Transport Company)
Trainees: 18 drivers referred by Hanoi bus lines operators.
Hanoi has 59 bus lines that operate 926 vehicles owned by six companies. Of the 1,864 drivers, 60 percent originate from the provinces, had little or no experience in city driving and were not given any specific training. Bus companies have no set rules with regard to hiring drivers. No continuing occupational training is available. Bus lines have to deal with increasingly heavy motorcycle and private car traffic. A mixture of the various modes of transportation is the rule and exclusive right-of-ways the exception. Bus stops are generally well indicated, but access to them is often challenging due to congestion. The fleet of buses is a mixed bag; low floors are unknown and there is insufficient capacity on a number of lines. The proposals put forth by TRAMOC to improve the situation include such things as harmonization of regulations and setting up a training centre.
